Yoga 101:

After hearing about yoga and its many physical and psychological benefits, you have finally signed up for your first class. After all, it seems as though everyone you know has tried it and raved about it afterwards, so you figured why not. As the first class is right around the corner, you find yourself wondering what to expect. You may be feeling nervous, unsure, and unprepared for the new fitness journey you are about to embark on. As with any new and exciting activity, your success is often times based on having the right tools to succeed. Below is a description of the accessories that you can begin to collect as you start your voyage to yoga success.

If you were to look at yoga as a recipe, the yoga mat would be your key ingredient. The yoga mat provides a specialized traction that will help to prevent you from slipping and assist you in maintaining your poses. Additionally, the yoga mat provides comfort and will help you not to slide. These mats come in different style and thickness levels, as well as colors and designs. As far as color and design go, choose a mat that shows off your personality. The style and thickness can depend on what type of yoga class it is that you are going to be doing. For example, if the class is going to include a lot of activity and fluid motion, you may need something a little bit thicker. Check with the instructor or the institution offering the class beforehand on what type of mat would be best suited for what you will be doing during your yoga class.

There are several accessories available to enhance your yoga experience. One of these accessories is the yoga block, which is either made from foam or wood and is utilized to give added support and increase extension for certain poses and yoga styles. Another tool that you can incorporate is the yoga strap. These straps are great for beginners because they assist in building your flexibility during poses until it is achieved on its own. An additional multi-purpose accessory is the yoga blanket, which comes in a variety of styles and should be chosen based on what makes you feel comfortable. These blankets are multi-purposes in that they can be folded to provide support during certain poses, such as a shoulder stand, and they also are used to place around you and provide warmth at the end of some yoga routines. A yoga bag may be something you want to eventually pick up as well in order to house all of your key yoga accessories.

Now that you have the right accessories to perform, what are you supposed to wear while you are practicing yoga? The key to yoga clothing is to remember not to wear anything that is going to limit the movement of your body in any way. Make sure what you are wearing is comfortable because relaxation is the key and being uncomfortable in what you are wearing will be a distraction. Loose fitting clothing made with sweat absorbing materials is your best option.

It is important not to get lost in the concern of what you need for a yoga class, and instead to focus on why it is you will begin to practice yoga and how it will positively affect your life. Remember that yoga is driven by uniting the mind, body, and spirit so bring your yoga accessories with you on the first day and enjoy your experience to the fullest.
